âWhatâre you two doing here?â
âIâm sorry. I know itâs late, but I needed to talk to you...â Claudia peered through the crack in the door into the room. âDo you mind if we come in?â
âSure, I guess...â Olivia replied. Ashton was looking at her searchingly. Bemused, she let the two of them in. As she did so, she noticed that Tabitha was sitting in her chair, just as sheâd promised.
Once inside, Claudia cast her gaze over every corner of the room. âThis is very spacious,â she said. It seemed to Olivia as though she were on watch for something.
âWhoâs the servant in the corridor?â
âApparently sheâs sitting there so if I ring the bell she can come right away.â
âThere? All night?â Ashton glared at the patch of wall behind which Tabitha sat.
âI guess. I did tell her she should go back to her own room and sleep...â Olivia looked at the other two. âThey didnât send someone for you?â
Ashton and Claudia both shook their heads in silence. Olivia was the only one receiving this service, then.
âTheyâve really thought of everything.â
âYeah...â
The other two both looked grim as Olivia showed them to the sofa, then sat herself down with the table in between them.
âWant something to drink?â she asked.
âIâd appreciate something warm, if you donât mind. Iâm freezing,â Claudia said, then looked over at the window. Engrossed in her thoughts, Olivia had totally failed to notice that it had started to rain.
âWhat about you, Ashton?â
âOh, something warm for me too.â
âGot it.â Olivia promptly rang the bell, there was a knock at the door, and Tabitha appeared. It really was a tough job, Olivia thought.
âLady Olivia, you called?â
âCan you bring something warm to drink for the three of us?â
âOf course, my lady. Will Mekian leygrantz do?â
âWell, I like it, so itâs fine by me...â Olivia looked over at Claudia and Ashton to confirm. They both nodded their agreement. âI guess thatâs fine, then.â
âVery good, my lady. Iâll put a pot on at once.â
Olivia watched Tabitha leave, then turned back to the other two. âIs something wrong?â she asked.
âThat,â Claudia replied, âis precisely the question I wanted to ask you. Did Seraph Sofitia say something to you?â
âHuh? Howâd you know?â Olivia was taken completely by surprise, for the simple reason that she thought sheâd acted completely normal around the others.
âBecause weâve known you long enough by now, Olivia,â Ashton said. âLieutenant Claudia will tell you Iâm not exactly perceptive, but even I can tell when youâre not yourself.â
Ashton looked more serious than Olivia had ever seen him. Claudia smiled drily and nodded. Oliviaâs initial surprise was fading, and happiness was bubbling up to take its place. Why, she couldnât have said. But right now, she felt happy.
âYou look pleased about something,â Ashton said dubiously.
âYep, I am.â
âYouâre so weird.â
As Ashton frowned, Claudia cleared her throat and asked, âSo just what did the seraph say to you, General?â
âWell...â Olivia got no further.
âIs it something you canât even tell us?â
For a moment, Olivia wavered on whether she ought to tell them.
